The Black Stars came from a beautifully scored volley by Kaizer Chiefs’ Mandla Masango to beat South Africa 2-1 in the final Group C match at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations, sealing qualification into the quarter-final stage.
Substitute John Boye equalized for Ghana in the second half after heated pressure from the four-time champions, who sealed the win through a Dede Ayew header.
Ghana will face the runner-up of Group D in the quarter-final to be played on Sunday, February 1.
With only a win to secure them instant qualification, the Black Stars began the match the hungrier of the two sides.
However, against the run of play, the Bafana Bafana, who were also eyeing qualification through a win, got the first goal in the 18th minute, when Masango’s volley beat Razak Braimah in post.
But the complexion of the game changed in the second half with the Stars pushing to break the South Africans, whose post was well-manned by Nhlanhla Khuzwayo.
But Boye’s lose ball beat the Kaizer Chiefs’ goalie to serve as a booster for the Stars, who sealed the match through Dede Ayew.
Ghana’s quarter-final match will be played in Malabo after the Confederation of African Football made changes to the venues of the quarter-final matches.
